Flint Energies’ Bright Ideas teacher grant program has been empowering creativity and learning since its start in 2006. Through the generosity of Consumer-members who participate in Operation Round Up, $25,000 is awarded each year to deserving teachers throughout our 17-county service area. Be inspired by the success stories of two of our Bright Ideas grant winners below.

Flint Energies Bright Ideas Teacher wins Award

Sheila Burke, a two-time Bright Ideas grant winner and physical education teacher in Bibb County, is a firm believer of how Flint Energies’ teacher grant program has enhanced her ability to offer more to her students.

“This grant meant a great deal for my classroom because we have a very small budget at my school,” Burke shares. “I combined literature and physical activity for the students for the first grant I applied for. Every time I read the word ‘dance’ from a book the students would dance, or when I read the word ‘go,’ they would have to run across the gym. In another grant, I was able to purchase pedometers for the children to use with P.E., so we incorporated mathematics into our physical education lesson."

Stephanie Justen Flint Energies Bright Ideas Winner

Stephanie Justen, a teacher in Peach County, has received the Bright Ideas grant multiple times. “The funds have truly been transformative for my students with special needs,” Stephanie explains. “I was able to purchase a mixer, hot plate, microwave, a large toaster oven, dishes, utensils, and other supplies needed to teach students how to make meals. They also learn the importance of food safety and cooking skills. You can see the long- term effects of teaching life skills. We are building self-esteem and confidence in these students and giving them tools to be as independent as possible. Teaching them these skills also helps our students get jobs in grocery stores and prepare them for the future.”
