The future of rural Georgia is being shaped by young people who are learning how to lead, serve, and invest in the places they call home.

In the latest episode of Front Porch Chats, we hear from recent graduates of Schley County High School who completed the EMPOWER Youth Leadership Program, a regional initiative designed to help students build confidence, develop leadership skills, and gain a deeper understanding of their communities.

Throughout the year, these students participated in hands-on experiences that challenged them to grow personally and professionally. EMPOWER focuses on helping students discover their strengths, improve communication skills, and understand the importance of teamwork, civic involvement, and community service.

Growing Through Experience

Leadership is not something learned only in a classroom—it develops through experiences, conversations, and opportunities to step outside of what feels comfortable.

For Schley County students, EMPOWER provided those opportunities through interactive leadership development sessions, exposure to community and economic development, and conversations with leaders from across the region. Students were encouraged to think critically, ask questions, and begin envisioning how they can contribute to the future of their hometowns.

Along the way, they developed practical life skills that will benefit them in college, careers, and everyday life.

Discovering the Value of Community

One of the key takeaways students shared was a stronger appreciation for the people and organizations working behind the scenes to make rural communities thrive.

By learning about cooperative education, community partnerships, and service initiatives, students saw firsthand that leadership often starts with simply being willing to serve others.

That understanding helped many of them recognize that no matter where life takes them, they have the ability—and responsibility—to make a positive impact.

Preparing for What Comes Next

As these Schley County graduates look ahead to graduation, college, and future careers, EMPOWER has given them more than memories. It has given them confidence.

Confidence to speak up.
Confidence to lead.
And confidence to believe they can make a difference.

Programs like EMPOWER are planting seeds that will continue growing for years to come, not only in the lives of these students but in the rural communities they will one day help lead.
