The future of Talbot County is bright—and it’s being shaped by students who are learning what it means to lead with confidence, purpose, and heart.

In the latest episode of Front Porch Chats, we hear from recent graduates of the EMPOWER Youth Leadership Program from Talbot County as they share how the experience helped them grow personally, develop leadership skills, and gain a stronger understanding of the communities they call home.

Designed to prepare high school students for future leadership roles, EMPOWER offers hands-on experiences that go far beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, students are challenged to step outside their comfort zones, engage with local leaders, and think more intentionally about the impact they can make.

Building Leaders Through Experience

Leadership development was at the center of the EMPOWER journey for Talbot County students.

Through interactive sessions focused on personal strengths, communication, teamwork, and service, students learned that leadership is not just about holding a title—it’s about taking initiative, listening well, and being willing to contribute.

These lessons helped students become more self-aware and more confident in their ability to navigate both personal and professional situations.

Understanding Community Impact

Another major takeaway from the program was learning how communities function and grow.

By exploring topics like cooperative education, community service, and economic development, students gained a behind-the-scenes understanding of the partnerships and organizations that keep rural Georgia strong.

This exposure helped students see that no matter what career path they choose, they each have a role to play in making their hometowns better.

Preparing for the Future

As these Talbot County graduates look ahead to graduation, college, careers, and adulthood, they do so with more than just knowledge—they do so with confidence.

EMPOWER gave them practical skills, new perspectives, and a stronger belief in their own ability to lead.

Programs like this are not only shaping students, but also investing in the long-term success of rural communities by preparing young people to become engaged citizens and future decision-makers.
