Leadership doesn’t begin when someone receives a title—it begins when they realize they have something valuable to contribute.

That realization is exactly what many Taylor County students discovered through the EMPOWER Youth Leadership Program, and in the latest episode of Front Porch Chats, recent graduates share how the experience helped shape their confidence, broaden their perspective, and prepare them for what comes next.

Designed to help high school students develop leadership skills and a stronger understanding of their communities, EMPOWER gives participants the opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences, real conversations, and meaningful service.

Learning to Lead with Confidence

For Taylor County students, one of the biggest takeaways from EMPOWER was confidence.

Through leadership development sessions, communication training, and activities centered around teamwork and problem-solving, students were challenged to step outside of what felt familiar and discover strengths they may not have realized they had.

Many shared that the program helped them become more comfortable speaking up, working with others, and seeing themselves as future leaders.

Seeing the Bigger Picture

EMPOWER also gave students a behind-the-scenes look at how communities operate.

By learning about cooperative education, community development, civic leadership, and service, students gained a better appreciation for the organizations and individuals who work every day to keep rural Georgia moving forward.

These experiences helped students understand that leadership can take many forms—and that every person has the ability to contribute to positive change.

Preparing for Life After High School

As these Taylor County graduates prepare for their senior year and begin thinking about college, careers, and adulthood, EMPOWER has already given them a valuable head start.

The practical life skills, professionalism, and leadership lessons they gained through the program will continue to serve them well in every stage ahead.

More importantly, the program helped students see that leadership is not reserved for “someday.” It starts now—with willingness, initiative, and heart.

Programs like EMPOWER are helping cultivate the next generation of community-minded leaders who will one day help shape the future of rural Georgia.
